Disney has officially confirmed that Hong Kong Disneyland’s 20th anniversary celebration will begin this summer! Dubbed “The Most Magical Party of All”, the celebration will introduce a brand new parade, a brand new castle stage show, and an updated version of the park’s popular nighttime spectacular Momentous! HKDL was my original home park and is still my favorite Disney park and the one I hold nearest to my heart, and I could not be more excited for these anniversary offerings. After not having a 15th anniversary celebration because of COVID-19, I was eagerly awaiting news of how the park would celebrate its 20th anniversary, and with these announced offerings it’s safe to say that this is the biggest celebration in HKDL history!

Hong Kong Disneyland 20th Anniversary Announcement Friendtastic

The all new parade “Friendtastic” will debut with the 20th anniversary celebration. Disney has said it will be HKDL’s largest parade ever with a total of 11 floats being included in the parade. Concept art shows Mickey and the gang all dressed up in colorful outfits as they ride on an equally as colorful float. We’ve known that a new parade was going to come to the park sooner or later, and what better way to debut the parade than with the 20th anniversary celebration!

I am a sucker for a good parade and the concept art for this looks very promising. My secret wish is for the parade to feature floats based on HKDL attractions like Mystic Manor and Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars. Only time will tell if that prediction is correct, but even if it isn’t I’m just happy the park won’t be parade-less anymore.

A new daytime castle stage show will also replace the Follow Your Dreams show that has been playing in the park for over 5 years now. The new castle stage show concept art features Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy along with Duffy, CookieAnn, StellaLou, and LinaBell dressed in their 20th anniversary outfits with a crowd of backup dancers. The concept art also reveals new decorations that will adorn the castle for the celebration. I never got to see Follow Your Dreams so I’m not particularly sad to see it go, but I can’t wait to see this new castle stage show.

Finally, Disney has also announced an updated version of Momentous, HKDL’s critically acclaimed and award winning nighttime spectacular, as part of the 20th anniversary offerings. Featuring “more Disney stories than ever before”, the updated show will also feature drones as well as projections on the facades of the Main Street USA buildings. I am cautiously optimistic about this, mostly because I worry that the new additions might ruin the thematic integrity of the show.

For the uninitiated, Momentous is about the stages of life beginning from birth until death. My worry is that they’ll let go of these themes in favor of cramming as many new Disney movies into the show as possible. Hopefully they don’t go down that path, but the inclusion of drones and projections along Main Street are welcome developments to the park’s nighttime spectacular arsenal.

As mentioned, Hong Kong Disneyland’s 20th anniversary celebration will begin this summer.
