Shanghai Disneyland Breaks Ground on New Spider-Man Coaster and Land

Shanghai Disneyland today broke ground on their upcoming Spider-Man themed land and attraction that will be coming to the park soon. The attraction, first officially announced at D23 2024, will be a Spider-Man themed rollercoaster.

Shanghai Disneyland announced further that the all-new coaster will be the centerpiece for an entire Spider-Man themed land. It will be the park’s ninth themed land and follows Toy Story Land and Zootopia as the third expansion to the park’s land count.

The land will also include shopping, food and beverage, and entertainment experiences centered around Spider-Man. It is currently unknown which version of Spider-Man will be featured in this new land, but it will most likely center around Tom Holland’s version of the character.

This will be a great addition to Shanghai Disneyland, a park that, aside from Roaring Rapids, RC Racer, and Tron Lightcycle Power Run, was lacking in thrill rides. I don’t really consider Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure a thrill ride, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train doesn’t really pack in a lot of thrill. Not to mention RC Racer is an off-the-shelf carnival ride with a Toy Story-themed skin. This is a net positive for the park, although I’m a bit disappointed that it’s going to be, yet again, a one-ride land.

Disney has gotten in the habit of creating one-ride lands over the last decade. From Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point to Zootopia and the upcoming World of Frozen and Lion King Land at the soon-to-be-renamed Disney Adventure World, Disney had honestly created stellar lands that just feel so empty. I would like it if they brought over Web Slingers for this land, although two Spider-Man rides could get very confusing to guests. Here’s to hoping they add even just a flat ride of some sort to really round out the land.

An opening timeline has not been given by the resort as of yet.
