Hong Kong Disneyland, on its 20th anniversary, has released an updated look at the Marvel-themed expansion coming to Tomorrowland. It has also given a first look at the Pixar Entertainment Experience coming to the plot of land found in between Toy Story Land and World of Frozen.
I honestly had a feeling that we would be getting new looks at both of these announced expansions today, as Josh D’Amaro quoted Walt Disney’s “Disneyland will never be complete…” saying during his remarks to open the park for its 20th anniversary earlier today. In addition, as has been reported by various HKDL update accounts, construction has already begun on both of these expansions. Let’s take a closer look at each piece of concept art and see what we can gleam from them.

The Pixar Entertainment Experience concept art shows a scene from Monsters Inc. where Mike and Sulley seem to have lost control of Boo as Child Detection Agency agents swarm the theater. Based on the concept art, we can assume that this attraction will be another stage show and will for sure feature at least Monsters Inc. The question now is if it will feature other Pixar movies as well, as the caption that accompanied the concept art seems to suggest that more Pixar stories will be included. Although, I would be fine if this show is just the “Put That Thing Back Where it Came From, or So Help Me” show from the blooper reel of Monsters Inc. A Monsters Inc musical would be amazing, but including other Pixar stories would make this show a larger draw for guests.
I also wonder how they’re going to structure the show as it seems to be reminiscent of Together: a Pixar Musical Adventure found at Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris even though previous press releases from Hong Kong Disneyland have indicated that the show will be exclusive to Hong Kong Disneyland, . The show in Walt Disney Studios also includes a Monsters Inc section in it. Although the caption indicated that this would be an “immersive theatrical experience”, so maybe it’ll have some elements that make it different from the Paris version of the show.
Klook.comThis will be the fifth stage show in the park after Festival of the Lion King, Mickey and the Wondrous Book, Moana: A Homecoming Celebration, and Playhouse in the Woods. It now begs the question if there are too many stage shows at Hong Kong Disneyland at this point. It would become the Disney park with the second-most theatrical stage shows, only behind Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
If that’s the case, my guess is that one of the current stage shows at Hong Kong Disneyland might be removed and reworked into a new attraction after this and the new Marvel attractions are done. If I were to pick one, it would probably be Mickey and the Wondrous Book. Festival of the Lion King is too popular to remove plus it’s also the venue of Let’s Get Wicked. Moana: A Homecoming Adventure won’t be removed because the new Moana-themed restaurant just opened beside it, and Playhouse in the Woods is too new for them to take away and would be hard to re-theme into anything not Frozen related because of its location.
Mickey and the Wondrous Book also has an almost exact clone at Shanghai Disneyland, so HKDL might want it removed to further differentiate the park from Shanghai Disneyland. I could see them adding a new ride of some sort into the building where Mickey and the Wondrous Book currently plays. As a reminder, this is all speculation on my part and I have no knowledge of Hong Kong Disneyland’s future plans. As a reminder, this was also previously announced to be fully funded by Hong Kong Disneyland.

Hong Kong Disneyland also dropped two new pieces of concept art for the new Marvel-themed additions coming to Stark Expo in Tomorrowland. The first piece of concept art shows the exterior of a building. It seems to be a research facility as indicated by the writing on the outside of the building. The caption that accompanied these pieces of concept art mentioned that “attractions”, plural, were coming to this area of the park. This leads me to believe that maybe more than one attraction is coming to this area of the park. The caption also mentioned entertainment coming to this area, but I predict it will be similar to the entertainment we have at Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure.
Based on its shape and height, this building will probably be home to the new Tower of Terror-like attraction that was announced to have a Spider-Man theme at last year’s D23 event in Anaheim. This begs the question of how this building is going to fit in with the Stark Expo theme of this side of Tomorrowland. This building looks too permanent and lavish to be a “pavilion” of the expo. I wonder how they’re going to tie in the building story-wise with the rest of the land. On the bright side, the addition of this original ride means that the marvel-themed area at Hong Kong Disneyland has at least 3 exclusive-to-HKDL rides in its lineup, which will be good for the park.

The second piece of concept art confirms that this building will house the Tower of Terror-style ride that was teased at D23. The ride vehicle present in the concept is similar to the Tower of Terror ride vehicle. The big, glaring difference, however, is that it’s no longer just Spider-Man but rather multiple Avengers who will be featured in this attraction. This is a welcome upgrade to the concept of this attraction and I’m excited to see which Avengers they include aside from the 4 featured in the concept art.
The background of the concept art features a city that looks like Asgard. Couple that with the portal at the bottom of the concept art and I think this ride will have us jumping through different worlds similar to what Avengers: Infinity Defense will do at Disney California Adventure. Now the only question is will the villain of the ride still be Doc Ock or if it will be a new villain or villains that haven’t been announced yet. I also wonder how the storyline of the ride will tie into Iron Man Experience and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle as those two attractions have interconnected storylines.
Also, will the ride system used in this attraction be similar to Hollywood Studios’ Tower of Terror which includes a dark ride section, or will it be similar to the California Adventure, Tokyo DisneySea, and Walt Disney Studios Paris versions of the ride that just have the drops. Or will it eschew all of them entirely and be similar to the Battle at the Ministry Harry Potter ride that debuted at Universal Epic Universe in Orlando? I’m personally hoping for the latter.
In addition, how will these changes affect the rest of Tomorrowland? Will the entire Tomorrowland be re-themed to Stark Expo? What will become of Hyperspace Mountain, Orbitron, Comet Cafe, and Starliner Diner if that’s the case? Or will Stark Expo spin-off into its own themed land behind what’s left of the current Tomorrowland? Only time will tell, I guess.
Klook.comHKDL is at a very exciting time in its history. These recent expansions have been received very well by guests, particularly the World of Frozen area. Adding these new rides to the mix will for sure make Hong Kong Disneyland one of the best Disney Parks on the planet. I can’t wait to experience these new additions myself in the coming years.
