One misconception a lot of people have about visiting any of the Disney Parks located around the world is that it’ll cost an arm and a leg to be able to visit. While it is pricey, there are many things you can do to make a Disney trip more affordable. For Hong Kong Disneyland in particular, there’s many things you can do to save on costs during your trip. That’s what this Hong Kong Disneyland on a Budget Guide is all about: how to have an affordable trip to the most underrated Disney Park in the world. 

From buying discounted tickets to picking the right day to visit, there’s a lot of things you can do before you arrive and while you’re at the park to cut down on costs and save a bit of money during your trip. I’ve outlined my personal tips on how to save at HKDL below. Hopefully these tips would help in making an HKDL trip more affordable.

Visit on a Weekday

If you’re visiting for a day and want to visit Hong Kong Disneyland on a budget, you should know that tickets tend to be cheaper on weekdays. Tuesdays to Thursdays are the best days to go during the week as they usually command cheaper prices compared to the weekends, Mondays, or Fridays. Hong Kong Disneyland implements dynamic pricing on one-day tickets, so days that are anticipated to be more crowded will be more expensive. To save money on Hong Kong Disneyland tickets, it’s crucial that you visit the park on a weekday.  

If you’re unsure if you want to buy a one-day ticket or a two-day ticket, buying a two-day ticket is cheaper per day than buying two one-day tickets. Two-day tickets do not have dynamic pricing and are the same price no matter when you go, so if you’re going on peak days you could use them to save a ton of money. Of course that means you’ll spend on additional meals and travel to get to the park on the second day, but I have ways you can save on those too later on in this post. 

Hong Kong Disneyland also regularly does ticket promotions where they offer discounted tickets which are sometimes bundled with other perks and freebies like merchandise vouchers or free souvenirs. Check the Hong Kong Disneyland website for the latest promotions. There is another website, however, that I would encourage you to buy tickets from as they usually have discounts on top of the existing promotions run by Hong Kong Disneyland. 

Buy Tickets Via Klook

Tickets purchased via Klook are usually about 10% cheaper than the regular tickets you can buy on the Hong Kong Disneyland website. This applies to one-day tickets and two-day tickets, as well as on special promotional tickets. Klook usually has the same promotions that Hong Kong Disneyland has on their website but with additional discounts. If you’re going for 1 or 2 days, I highly recommend Klook as they also sell packages with Disney Premier Access, Early Park Entry Passes, and Meal Vouchers (more on these later).

If you’re going to Ocean Park or the Ngo Ping 360, for example, you can use Klook to buy cheaper tickets for those attractions as well. This is one of my biggest tips to save money at Hong Kong Disneyland and is what I recommend you do if you want to go to Hong Kong Disneyland on a budget.

Or Buy Magic Access Passes

If you’re planning on going on multiple trips in a year, or plan on going for 3 or more days, it might make more sense to buy an annual pass or what Hong Kong Disneyland calls Magic Access Passes. I know buying an annual pass and going to HKDL for three days may not seem like doing Hong Kong Disneyland on a budget, but the pass does come with merchandise and food discounts, which will help you save even more money. 

You can buy your Magic Access pass via the Hong Kong Disneyland website. Do note that for Children aged 3-11, Students aged 12-25, and Seniors aged 60+, there is a discounted rate available for you to purchase that will save you even more money. A Silver Magic Access pass for a student is just around HK$50 more expensive than a regular two-day ticket, so you could save money at Hong Kong Disneyland by buying a Magic Access pass. Sometimes there are even additional discounts on top of that offered by Hong Kong Disneyland, so watch out for those.  

If you aren’t sure you want to commit to buying an annual pass yet, you can always upgrade your one-day ticket to an annual pass at the Magic Access Service Center located in the Art of Animation Building on Main Street if you decide you want to return in the near future. In fact, if you upgrade your ticket to an annual pass at this service center, you get a few hundred Hong Kong Dollars shaved off the difference you need to pay to upgrade to an annual pass. 

Take the MTR to the Resort

If you’re coming from the city, consider taking the MTR to go to Hong Kong Disneyland instead of a taxi. The MTR is Hong Kong’s metro rapid transit system, and there’s a station located just a short walk from the entrance to the park. You can basically reach Hong Kong Disneyland via MTR from anywhere in Hong Kong, making it the most efficient way to get to Hong Kong Disneyland on a budget.  

Taking a taxi may only be worth it if you’re coming from nearby AND if your party is made up of 3-4 people as you can split the fare. But otherwise, the MTR is the way to go! This is especially true if you’re travelling solo. If you want to save money going to Hong Kong Disneyland, take the MTR! Just be sure to allocate 15-90 minutes to get to and from Hong Kong Disneyland, depending on where you’re coming from or going to and how many times you need to change MTR lines.

Rope Drop 

Now if you’re visiting at a busy time, you might be tempted to buy the expensive Premier Access packages. But if you’re on a budget you might not have leftover cash to spend on Premier Access passes. Well, luckily there’s a way to still get on the most popular rides without a wait: Rope Drop. 

For those unfamiliar with the practice of Rope Drop, I wrote a whole Hong Kong Disneyland Rope Drop guide. Basically, Rope Drop is the practice of arriving at a Disney Park at least an hour before the scheduled park opening time in order to be one of the first to enter the park so that you can ride the most popular rides in the early morning when the wait times aren’t crazy long yet. By arriving before the crowds, you can get 5-6 attractions done in the first 1-2 hours that the park is open. 

The more rides you get done in the morning, the more the rest of your day decompresses. Since you hit so many attractions in the morning, your afternoon is now a lot less packed and a lot less stressful. Rope Drop is especially helpful during peak times. Hong Kong Disneyland has light crowds for about 80% of the year, but if you happen to visit during a busy period, rope dropping will save you from having to spend hundreds of dollars on Premier Access passes and packages. 

Use Meal Vouchers

If you want to save money on meals, you’ll be happy to know that Hong Kong Disneyland offers meal vouchers for you to use. How these vouchers work is that you pay a set price and receive a coupon that you can use to redeem a lunch meal, a dinner meal, and a snack at the park. You can only use this voucher at the following quick service restaurants: Comet Cafe, Starliner Diner, Clopin’s Festival of Foods, Royal Banquet Hall, Tahitian Terrace, and Golden Crocus Inn. 

Buying these vouchers will save you about HK$70 per person per day. The maximum value of the lunch and dinner meals is HK$160 per meal. This means that, to maximize the value of your voucher, you need to eat meals that are exactly HK$160. If you choose to eat a meal that’s more expensive, you’ll have to pay the difference between the value of the meal and the value of the voucher. 

You also get one free snack during your day at the park with this voucher, which can either be an ice cream or a popcorn from one of the outdoor vending carts . To redeem the lunch meal, you need to order at the restaurant before 4:30pm. To redeem the dinner meal, you need to order between 4:30pm and 30 minutes before the restaurant closes for the day. These vouchers are a great way to save money at Hong Kong Disneyland, and are perfect if you need to go to Hong Kong Disneyland on a budget.

Pack Food from Home

If you don’t want to spend money on food at all in the park, you can bring outside food and beverages into the park. According to park rules, “Guests are allowed to bring individual portioned food and beverage items into the Park for self-consumption. For example, apples, bananas, bags of chips, packaged biscuits, bread and sandwiches, etc. are allowed.” This is taken directly from the Hong Kong Disneyland website.

Do note that the following food items are not allowed at the park: “food which needs to be heated, reheated, processed, refrigerated or temperature controlled will not be allowed. Any raw meat, sashimi or any food with pungent smells are also banned. For example, instant noodles that require hot water, food kept in containers with reheating capabilities such as self-cooking hotpots, fruits that require processing with knife such as whole watermelon or pineapple, cakes that require temperature control, durian products, stinky tofu, strong smelling cheese, strong smelling fish or seafood will not be allowed. Meanwhile, alcoholic beverages, cans or glass containers cannot be brought to the park.”

If you’d like to bring in sandwiches to save money at Hong Kong Disneyland, you are more than welcome to do so. It’s one of the best things to do if you’re going to Hong Kong Disneyland on a budget because, admittedly, food at the Hong Kong Disneyland resort can be kind of pricey. In my opinion it’s the most overpriced part of the resort, so take that in consideration when planning how you’re going to eat at the park.

Bring a Water Bottle

To save money at Hong Kong Disneyland, I would recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to the park. There are water stations located all over the park in the vicinity of some bathrooms. You can save on having to buy bottles of water by bringing a reusable water bottle and just refilling at these water stations instead. 

Navigate to the park map in the Hong Kong Disneyland app and click on guest services to see the locations of the different water bottle filling stations around the park. This is a very simple yet effective way to do Hong Kong Disneyland on a budget, so I highly recommend taking advantage of the bottle refilling stations to save some money. 

Stay at an Offsite Hotel or Take Advantage of Hotel Discounts

If you want to save on hotel costs, I would advise you not to stay at the Disney hotels. While the Disney hotels are incredibly well themed and gorgeously designed, they are quite pricey. Instead, consider staying at the many hotels that populate Downtown Hong Kong. It’ll be cheaper overall to just take the MTR to the park and pay for a hotel in the city than paying for a Hong Kong Disneyland Resort hotel. 

I would recommend using Booking.com or Agoda to book your hotel stay in Hong Kong. These two sites usually offer hotel rooms at huge discounts and they will save you a ton of money as well. The more you use them to book accommodation options, the higher your tier with them which corresponds to more savings. I would highly recommend booking with them so that you can also save on future trips. 

If you really want to stay at a Disney hotel, however, they do offer discounts periodically that make their hotel rooms a lot more affordable. I’ve seen discounts as high as 30% on the Hong Kong Disneyland hotel rooms on their website, so it doesn’t hurt to check if you’re interested in staying onsite. But if you need to do Hong Kong Disneyland on a budget, then staying offsite is your best bet.
