Marvel and Pixar Expansions at Hong Kong Disneyland were announced on February 25, 2025 during an earnings presentation given by HKDL Managing Director Michael Moriarty. He detailed the record breaking numbers from Hong Kong Disneyland’s latest fiscal year, as well as revealing more details for HKDL’s upcoming 20th anniversary celebration.

Hong Kong Disneyland announced its earnings for the 2024 Fiscal Year. The resort’s Fiscal Year, which ended on September 30th, 2024, saw huge gains across the board. For the first time in almost 10 years, HKDL posted a net profit. It was also the highest net profit the resort has ever seen, with the resort earning HK$ 838 million (US$107.8 million). The resort also recorded its highest attendance figures ever, with 7.7 million people visiting Hong Kong Disneyland in the last year.

These are all very good signs for the resort. HKDL has always been the black sheep of the Disney Parks family, so seeing it post record-breaking numbers is very encouraging and a good sign of things to come. These numbers can be attributed to the World of Frozen expansion, which the park opened during the 2024 fiscal year.

Merchandise for 20th anniversary

In addition to announcing its financial figures, the park also revealed more about the resort’s 20th anniversary. 20th anniversary exclusive merchandise and food offerings were previewed by the resort. Specifically, the resort previewed some plushies featuring the Disney characters in their 20th anniversary celebration outfits, as well as some desserts that will be offered in the park as part of this year-long celebration.

In addition, the resort unveiled a new piece of concept art for one of the floats that will be featured in the new Friendtastic parade. The concept art showed an Encanto themed float, which was designed to look like the movie’s casita. Mirabel, Luisa, Isabela, and Bruno could also be seen on the float.

This reveal has made me more excited for the parade. When they revealed the two floats before this one, I was concerned that these floats were going to look like the Dream and Shine Brighter floats where they all have the same design. I’m glad to know that this isn’t the case and I can’t wait to see the other 8 floats they’ve designed for the parade.

The big announcement the park made, however, was that Pixar and Marvel-themed expansions are on their way to the parks. No timeline was given on when these would begin construction, but the Marvel expansion will be located in the Autopia expansion pad, while the Pixar experience will be located in the parcel of land between Toy Story Land and World of Frozen.

We knew that the Marvel ride was coming since it was announced at D23 last year, but the Pixar Experience came as a surprise to me. It’s being billed as a “Pixar Entertainment Experience” that will be entirely funded by Hong Kong Disneyland. Rumors online have been saying it will be an indoor interactive experience featuring Pixar Characters and will be exclusive to Hong Kong Disneyland and a first of its kind.

This, honestly, has me a bit confused and a bit disappointed. I’m not disappointed that more Pixar is coming to the parks as Disney has shown they can make incredible themed spaces based off of movies. World of Frozen is an amazing example of that, and so is Fantasy Springs. I’m more disappointed by the fact that the “experience” isn’t going to be a ride.

HKDL could use more rides in its attraction lineup, especially non-flat rides. Out of HKDL’s 20 rides, almost half of them are flat rides or modes of transportation. It could use more immersive, themed rides in its lineup, or even a ride like Toy Story Mania would have been a nice addition.

But that now leaves the question of what is the experience going to be? My mind immediately went to a show, but HKDL already has 5 shows and is going to be getting a parade. Then I thought that maybe it’ll be a walkthrough attraction similar to Fairy Tale Forest, which is a possibility.

However the idea that I like the most, although I doubt it’s going to happen, is maybe it’s all three. Maybe it’s a ride, show, and walkthrough all rolled into one similar to Rise of the Resistance in the US parks. That would make sense as to why they called it an “entertainment experience” and not a ride because it will also have non-ride elements to it.

But given that it’s going to be funded by HKDL, I’m assuming the budget isn’t high enough to build a complete Rise of the Resistance experience. They do still have money left over from the last expansion that they haven’t used, although that funding may go to the Marvel attraction.

Whatever this entertainment experience is going to be, I hope it’s more in line with World of Frozen, Grizzly Gulch, and Mystic Point than it is Toy Story Land and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle. HKDL, for the most part, has delivered high quality expansions, and it needs to keep doing so if it wants to replicate the success that World of Frozen has given the park.

The future of HKDL is bright, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the upcoming years. I’m excited for all the additions coming to the park, especially for its 20th anniversary. Now if we could only get Paint the Night to come back, that would be great.
