Premiering as part of Hong Kong Disneyland’s (HKDL) 20th Anniversary Celebration, dubbed “The Most Magical Party of All”, Momentous: Party in the Night Sky is the park’s new nighttime spectacular. It’s an enhanced version of the park’s current nighttime spectacular “Momentous”. Featuring drones and projections down Main Street, the show also has an extended runtime of almost 30 minutes.

But how much does the expanded version improve on the original version, if it even does improve on it? In this review I will be going over everything you need to know about this nighttime spectacular.

Klook.comPre-Show Matters and Background

On February 5, 2025 Hong Kong Disneyland announced that it would be altering and enhancing its hit nighttime spectacular Momentous for the park’s 20th Anniversary. The new show, called Momentous: Party in the Night Sky, would add an additional 10 minutes to Momentous’ runtime. It was also announced that the show would include drones and projections on the buildings along Main Street, USA.
I was initially skeptical about this change. Momentous is a perfect nighttime spectacular and my fear was that it would be bloated and overblown for the sake of creating another offering for the anniversary. I was worried that the message and emotional journey of the show would be lost. I was secretly hoping that maybe they would just add all of the new stuff at the beginning of Momentous and just keep the original show as is.

Well, it turns out, that’s exactly what they did.
While it doesn’t meaningfully enhance Momentous or its themes and can sometimes feel disjointed, Momentous: Party in the Night Sky is a fun, dazzling spectacle. The new drone technology is impressive and captivating. The biggest loss, however, is that the drones were not added to regular Momentous. But for what it is, Momentous: Party in the Night Sky is a good-not-great way to cap off a visit to HKDL during the Most Magical Party of All.
Before the Show and Viewing Tips

In my most recent trip to the park I was able to watch the show twice. Both times I watched from the same spot on Main Street, which was about halfway down the street beside Center Street Boutique. On the first night I arrived 15 minutes before the scheduled start time of the show and there was still a decent amount of space left on Main Street.
The next night, however, I arrived 30 minutes before showtime and Main Street was chock full of people sitting and waiting for the show. I would say that, if you want to have your pick of spots on Main Street or the hub, you should arrive between 30 and 45 minutes before the show. If you want a spot closer to the castle, I suggest you arrive even earlier.

There is an option to see the show from the area directly in front of the castle, but currently the only ways to get access to this area is to reserve a dinner meal at the Explorer’s Club Restaurant at Mystic Point or by purchasing the topmost tier of the Disney Premier Access Packages.
Honestly though, the only benefit of this space is that you get to see the show with an unobstructed view. You still need to arrive early to make sure you have the best spot in the viewing area. If you only have one day in the park though, I wouldn’t waste park time doing the meal at Explorer’s Club and would instead shoot for the Premier Access package if you really need it. But if you’re going on a relatively light day, which honestly is most days at HKDL, you could arrive at the hub or Main Street 15 minutes before showtime and still get a good spot.

I would say that it’s no longer necessary to watch the show from the hub, especially with the new projections that go down the length of Main Street. While some of the visuals can only be seen on the castle, the castle is big and tall enough that unless you’re at the very end of Main Street, you can still get a pretty good view. I would say about halfway down Main Street is the best place to watch now as you get the view of the castle along with the projections on Main Street.
The Show Itself

Momentous: Party in the Night Sky starts out like regular Momentous. However, halfway through the intro instrumental, the voice of the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella beckons over the crowd, inviting everyone to the Most Magical Party of All. A drone formation of Mickey Mouse holding balloons then appears on the right side of the castle, followed by a clock on the left side of the castle.

Mickey then speaks to the audience, although to be honest I didn’t know what he was saying as all the dialogue was in Cantonese. As far as I can gather, he’s trying to assemble everything he needs for a party. A drone formation of Tinkerbell then appears and casts a spell on the castle. The magic ignites the buildings along Main Street, which makes the buildings burst to life with projections.

The three fairies from Sleeping Beauty then appear in drone form, with Flora and Merriweather fighting over what color to make the castle as the theme of the anniversary plays. The Fairy Godmother then says that “a party needs a joyful sound”. The lights then go out and then a drone formation of Miguel from Coco appears, followed by another of him playing the guitar as Proud Corazon plays. The bridge from the movie then appears via drones as the anniversary theme song plays again.

The Fairy Godmother then says that “the party is best spent with friends and family”, with Mickey enthusiastically agreeing. This then transitions into the song Friend Like Me from Aladdin as six drone Genie faces form a pyramid on top of the castle. The six Genies then begin moving into another formation as the song continues. The six genies then become the seven Duffy and Friends characters.

The Fairy Godmother then says that “with true friends by your side, a party feels like magic inside”. The Momentous gong is then heard and soon fireworks light up the sky as a rousing version of the anniversary theme song is played. A huge drone formation of the 20th Anniversary logo fills the sky behind the castle as fireworks pop up and ignite the sky.

Finally, the Fairy Godmother recites a wish that she has for us. She hopes that “family and friends may fill our hearts with celebration that lasts long past the stroke of midnight”. After this, regular Momentous begins.
Thoughts on Momentous: Party in the Night Sky
Before I begin with my thoughts, I wanted to make it clear that this review of Momentous: Party in the Night Sky will only focus on the new, anniversary-only pre-show. I will not be reviewing Momentous itself as no changes were made to that show other than the presence of projections down Main Street USA.
Let’s start with the positives. The drone technology is spectacular. I was actually standing there with my jaw on the floor as I looked at the drones lighting up the sky. In particular, the ending drone formation of the logo of the 20th Anniversary was so huge and stunning that it sent chills down my spine. The projections down Main Street were also very crisp and clear. The technology used here is the real star of the show.

I know a lot of people’s main criticism of the show is that it is essentially just a pre-show and no changes were made to the main Momentous show, but for me this is the biggest positive of the show. As I mentioned, regular Momentous is one of the best nighttime shows ever created, and changing it just to say they added something would dilute its message and cheapen its impact in my opinion. I love that they just decided to add a pre-show to Momentous instead as it keeps the original spirit of the show alive.
Finally, I love how the show connects to the other 20th anniversary shows. The other 20th Anniversary shows center on the theme of friendship and family. Momentous: Party in the Night Sky continues highlighting these themes through its script and song choices. This in turn makes the entire anniversary celebration more cohesive, which makes it a lot more meaningful.

Now for the negatives. Momentous: Party in the Night Sky doesn’t really have an overarching plot or narrative thread the way that regular Momentous does. I mean it technically does as Mickey and the Fairy Godmother enlist the help of other magical Disney characters to create the Most Magical Party of All, but because most of the dialogue is a mix between Cantonese and English, I felt like I was only understanding half of the basic idea of the show. The show doesn’t do a good job of explaining its story fully, and some work could have been done in the script department.
Also, the very thin plot is basically just an excuse to string a set of Disney songs together, making the whole thing feel rather disjointed and hastily put together. The drone formations, while impressive, didn’t really forward the story or the theme of the show. They felt kind of random, actually, as if there was no rhyme or reason behind why they chose certain elements of the show to be done via drone. It was as if they wanted the technology but didn’t know how to use it or what to do with it.

In addition, the new show doesn’t really add anything meaningful to the mainline Momentous show. It’s also not particularly memorable. I even had to watch a Youtube video to remember certain parts of the show for this review, which you can tell is a bad sign. The length of the show is another negative for me. No guest is going to want to stand for an extra ten minutes in a crowd full of people after a long day at the park.
Ultimately, it’s the lack of any cohesion or story that docks Momentous: Party in the Night Sky down several pegs. Impressive technology doesn’t really matter if it’s used without a uniform direction. While I still left the show feeling the Disney magic, it was overall just an ok show, and that’s fine too. It isn’t meant to be this big headliner the way Friendtastic is. It was just meant to dazzle, and to that end it succeeds. But without any meaning behind the spectacle, it feels a little hollow.
Momentous: Party in the Night Sky Review Conclusion

Even though the show didn’t resonate with me, it’s still a fun show that a lot of people will appreciate. Not everyone is going to be very particular about the fact that it lacks a story. Most people will just see drones and call it a good show, which is fine as well. But as someone who runs a blog about Disney Parks, I think I need to hold Disney to a higher standard. This show is ok, and while I wouldn’t consider it a dud, I definitely think it needs to be reworked somehow. It’s fine for what it is, but isn’t anything special.
