At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, new concept art and details were announced for the upcoming Spider-Man land and rollercoaster coming to Shanghai Disneyland. While D23 didn’t have a lot of Shanghai Disneyland news, what they did reveal got me excited for this future addition to Shanghai Disneyland. I made sure to gather all the details revealed by Walt Disney Imagineering over D23 weekend about this land and the future of Shanghai Disneyland.
This article will go over all the information released by Disney about Shanghai Disneyland during D23. I will also give my thoughts on what was released, as well as on my other predictions for Shanghai Disneyland that didn’t materialize this weekend.
So without further ado, let’s talk about it!

Spider-Man Land Details Revealed

Disney revealed new concept art of the Spider-Man rollercoaster coming to Shanghai Disneyland, as well as details on some of the elements coming to the land. It was announced that 20 murals made by local artists will be featured in the land. One of the murals was displayed in the Imagineering pavilion at the D23 show floor.
But the biggest tidbit that was dropped during the Disney Experiences Showcase was the story of the rollercoaster coming to Shanghai Disneyland. Walt Disney Imagineering revealed that the coaster was built by W.E.B., or the Worldwide Engineering Brigade. Disneyland and Disneyland Paris fans will recognize that this is the same organization behind the Web Slinger attractions at both resorts.
In the ride, Peter and the other volunteers at W.E.B. create a rollercoaster with the help of the Spider-Bots, the cute spider robots also found in the Web Slinger attractions. Of course, something goes horribly wrong with the Spider-Bots, and that is what we’re going to see play out while we are on the coaster.

A brand new piece of concept art of the ride was also shared by Walt Disney Imagineering. In the concept art, the rollercoaster can be seen twisting around a giant Spider-Bot as Spider-Man tries to control it using his webs. This is also the first time we get to see the ride at night. It’s still unknown if Spider-Man and the Spider-Bot will be animatronics.
I like that Shanghai Disneyland is partnering with local artists to create the visuals of the land. They also did the same thing with Zootopia, which is just another way they keep to the original vision of the park of it being “authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese”. I do wish though that we got more concept art of the land itself. Maybe a look at the dining and shopping options coming to the land, as well as a name for the ride and an opening timeframe.
That’s my biggest critique of the announcements made for Shanghai Disneyland. It’s alright that nothing new was revealed, but I just wish we got more. More concept art, more details, more ride story, just more. I understand that maybe Shanghai Disneyland wants to announce the finer details on their own terms, but one new piece of concept art for a whole land that’s rumored to be debuting next year isn’t enough.

My other biggest criticism is the story of the ride. This will be the third time that they are using the Worldwide Engineering Brigade and the Spider-Bots in a ride. I wish that a different, more creative concept was created for this rollercoaster. Spider-Man fights tons of villains in his comics, I’m sure that one of them could have been the main antagonist for the ride, whether that be Doc Ock or Sandman or any of the other villains. Still, I have hope that at least it’s going to be a fresh take on the Spider-Bots and not just have them overrun the area like in the other Spider-Man rides.
The concept art they revealed did give me hope though that this ride might be good. I do like how it looks at night as well, and I hope the lighting package found in this concept art makes its way to the rest of the ride and land. I still don’t know how I feel about an exposed steel coaster being present in a Disney Park, but I’m willing to give the imagineers the benefit of the doubt.
Overall, I’m excited to experience this new coaster when it debuts! I hope that they are able to expand the concept of the Spider-Bots as villains in a way that is fun and exciting. The last section of track has already been installed, so testing for the ride should begin soon. I can’t wait to learn more about the ride in the coming months.
My Other Prediction (That Didn’t Come True)

While I predicted that we were going to get more info about the Spider-Man attraction, there was one prediction I made about Shanghai Disneyland that unfortunately did not happen at D23: the announcement of a second theme park at Shanghai Disney Resort. It’s been rumored for a very long time and when it wasn’t announced during the park’s 10th anniversary last June, I thought for sure they were going to announce it at D23.
I did, however, overlook one tiny thing: D23 is coming to Asia next June. I think Shanghai Disneyland may want to announce the new park then. It’s probably also why we didn’t get anything for Disney Abu Dhabi at this D23. I would think that, if Disney wanted to save a huge announcement for that D23, it would be this.
It’s really only a matter of time before they announce it. The park has been overperforming for years now, and adding a second park just makes logical sense. The timing of the announcement, though, remains to be seen. They might even want to announce it after the Spider-Man land opens at the park. Whenever they choose to announce it, I’m excited for what the future holds for the resort!
