Zootopia opened in Shanghai Disneyland in December 2023. Since then, it has become the most popular land in Shanghai Disneyland. Disney reported that 1 in 4 visitors to Shanghai Disneyland were there just to visit Zootopia, and Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, the land’s marquee attraction, received the highest guest feedback scores of any ride in the park. I was finally able to visit the land in May 2026 and was able to see and experience all the land’s attractions, shows, food, and merchandise, which means I can fully review every aspect of this land!

Zootopia land me

Of every Disney land that I have yet to experience, there were 3 that, to me, stood out: Fantasy Springs in Tokyo DisneySea, Pandora: The World of Avatar in Animal Kingdom, and Zootopia. Zootopia has been high on my bucket list for some time now, so I decided to finally make my big return to Shanghai Disneyland in 2026, mostly to experience the 10th anniversary and to experience this land. I have lots of thoughts, mostly positive, about the land that I can’t wait to share with all of you!

Background

Zootopia land skyline

The land was first announced to be coming to Shanghai Disneyland in early 2019. From being first announced, it took almost 5 years to complete Zootopia land, with the land opening on December 20, 2023. The development of this land was a challenge for the Imagineers as a lot of them were coordinating from the other side of the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Against all odds, the land opened and quickly became a massive hit with guests.

The land was to include one ride, now known as Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, a shop called Fashions by FruFru, one snack window called Jumbeaux’s Cafe, and a couple of snack carts. It would also have a dedicated meet and greet space for Nick and Judy. When they announced that this was all that was coming to the land, I became skeptical. How could a land be immersive when it offered so little? By comparison, Hong Kong Disneyland’s World of Frozen has 2 rides, a show, a quick service restaurant, a snack shop, and a gift store. Zootopia seemed really small by comparison.

Zootopia land giraffe bus

However, when the land opened in 2023, it became such a massive hit that Shanghai Disneyland had people lining up for hours just to enter the land. If you go to Shanghai Disneyland now, most people are dressed as Nick and Judy, with some even dressing as other characters like Flash and Bellwether. Zootopia-mania has overtaken Shanghai Disneyland, which in my opinion is for the better.

Before visiting the land, I had seen countless pictures and videos of it. Safe to say I was sufficiently spoiled of every detail in the land. Because of this, I thought the land wasn’t going to blow me away. I was expecting to be slightly disappointed, I mean it was still incredibly small, so there’s no way it was going to measure up to other single-IP lands like Cars Land, Galaxy’s Edge, and World of Frozen.

Zootopia land building artsy

But boy, was I wrong.

Zootopia is a masterpiece of Imagineering. Every element of the land works seamlessly together to create a one-of-a-kind experience. While it could be a little bigger, I was blown away by the attention to detail that Imagineers put into every square inch of that land. To its benefit, the land also contains what I believe to be one a pinnacle of modern dark ride Imagineering in Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. This is by far the best expansion Shanghai Disneyland has seen, and it will be regarded as a theme park classic in the next 20 years.

Story

Zootopia land follows a trend that Imagineering has done recently where they time your visit to the land to a certain in-story holiday, celebration, or special event. This can be seen in other lands, such as in World of Frozen in Hong Kong and Paris where you’re visiting during Summer Snow Day and the Snowflower Festival, respectively. This can also be seen, to a lesser extent, in Cars Land where you’re visiting during race day.

Zootopia land at Shanghai Disneyland continues this trend, with a backstory that ties the land and the ride together. When you visit Zootopia, you’re visiting during Zootopia day! This is also known as the day when both predator and prey set aside their differences and decided to live together. To celebrate, there will be a Gazelle concert that night.

Zootopia land screen

Of course, something goes wrong, in this case, escaped convict and former mayor Bellwether, in an effort to sow discord amongst the Zootopia population, has kidnapped Gazelle in order to ruin Zootopia day. This is now the plot of the ride, as you are now recruited to join the ZPD and help rescue Gazelle from former mayor Bellwether.

While there are some hints of the celebration peppered throughout the land in the form of posters about the Gazelle concert, the celebration isn’t in your face the way that Summer Snow Day at Hong Kong Disneyland is. Zootopia Day is a lot more subtle in Zootopia land. I will say that this works in the land’s favor, providing a backstory for those that know it, but not taking away from the experience for those who don’t know it.

Zootopia land signs

You could go through the land and the attraction and not know about the Zootopia Day context and still feel like you were immersed in the world of Zootopia. I like that they added the context of the story as it adds another layer for people in the know, but as most guests probably won’t know the backstory, the land is able to work on multiple levels for those that do and don’t know. This is more inclusive and is very guest-forward.

Setting and Design

Zootopia’s biggest flaw, if you could even call it that, is that it’s a small land. The land is shaped like an inverted letter U. As mentioned, it has the attraction, one shop, one snack window, and a few snack carts. The rest of the land is taken up by buildings and facades. It’s a very small land, and I didn’t realize how small it was till I got there myself.

I arrived on my first day in the park and decided I had to walk around the land immediately. After all, it was the biggest reason for my trip. So I headed over there and upon entering the land I was immediately overwhelmed. I wandered through the land, my jaw agape, and realized after walking for about a minute that I was already at the other end of the land. I was confused, and a little disappointed, that the land ended so abruptly. It also doesn’t help that it terminates just a few feet away from the Winnie the Pooh mini-land, a juxtaposition which could cause anyone whiplash.

Zootopia land sign with eggs

I wish the land was bigger. It could have benefited from a second ride or a full, indoor restaurant. Also, the size of the land means that only a limited number of people can be inside at any given time. They didn’t take into account how many people would want to enter the land. This causes some days to have waits of upwards of an hour just to enter the land. And the queueing area is an unthemed white tent. This is probably the biggest negative of the land. Its size is both a giant missed opportunity and a logistical nightmare on busy days when waits for the land can be long.

But I will say, all of that can be forgiven because of the amount of love, care, detail, and placemaking that the Imagineers put into the land. Seriously, this is the most detailed land I’ve ever seen. It’s as if Imagineers kept saying “Yes, and” and kept building on each idea. The amount of small and big themed elements I saw convinced me that I had stepped into the real Zootopia.

Zootopia land bench

There were benches in three different sizes to accommodate different sized mammals. Small cars were parked under the big bench as if owned by small rodents. There were three different kinds of crosswalk lights for different sized mammals. The ATM machine had one for bats that was upside down. There’s a cap for a rhino hanging from a building with space for its horn. There were height clearances for Giraffes on the road.

Literally every possible detail you could imagine, it was there. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It’s like I literally stepped into the movie. The Imagineers deserve their flowers for this land because I walked through it 7 times over 5 days and all 7 times I discovered something new. It was so astonishing, and the land completely comes alive at night as well. Seeing the facades and buildings all lit up was just so immersive that I genuinely suspended my disbelief for a second.

Zootopia land small door

This land is a masterclass in design. I couldn’t believe that the team designing it basically had to work remotely through COVID and this is what they came up with. I can only imagine how much more amazing it would have been if they were allowed to tour the site in person while it was being built. It’s a testament to the creativity of the Imagineers. They were given a small space to work with and they ran with it and filled it with so much detail that it feels larger than it actually is.

Zootopia land revolving door

And I think that’s the strength of this land: because of how detailed it is, it feels larger than life. I really was so overwhelmed walking through it the first time because there’s just a million things to look at that it left my head spinning in the best way. It may be a small land, but like I said I can forgive it for its size because what they did with the space limitations was amazing.

Zootopia land mouse

And they even tried to extend the land by adding doorways that lead to the other districts that just so happen to be inaccessible. It’s that kind of theming that broadens the world of the land, even within a limited space. That small space suddenly felt like the limitless possibility of Zootopia. This project was Imagineering letting all of us know that their creativity and innovativeness is unparalled. I have so much more confidence in them after seeing this land, and I hope every land moving forward is inspired by this one.

Attractions

Zootopia land tunnels

The land really has only 1 attraction, which is Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. It also has another minor show attraction called Zootopia Comes Alive. I have a separate review for Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, which I will link below. I will try to summarize each attraction and give my thoughts on them below to give you a fuller picture of the land.

Zootopia: Hot Pursuit

Zootopia land gazelle

Zootopia: Hot Pursuit is the one and only ride in the land. It’s a trackless dark ride that follows Nick and Judy as they try to save Gazelle from the clutches of the former mayor turned convict Bellwether. It’s my second favorite ride in the park, and is probably one of the best dark rides Disney has made this decade. It’s immersive, fun, and blends physical sets with screens very well.

The story of the ride starts in the queue. The queue, by the way, is my favorite queue in the park. It’s as detailed as the land outside the ride. You first pass the lobby of the police station, which features a large animatronic of Officer Clawhauser. You then enter investigative services where you see Nick and Judy’s cubicles.

Zootopia land clawhauser

Afterwards you enter the jail, which to me is the best part of the queue. You pass by jail cells for different kinds of animals, before finally reaching Bellwether’s cell, which you will notice has a hole in it as she’s now escaped. It’s story elements like this that you miss if you pass through the premier access queue, so I’d highly recommend walking through the full queue before you try to ride via premier access or single rider.

You then encounter a Chief Bogo animatronic which leads the pre-show. That’s where you find out that Bellwether has kidnapped Gazelle. Nick and Judy, spotting a clue in the video, tell the new recruits to go to Tundra Town. Chief Bogo tells them that they’re responsible for the new recruits, and that if anything were to happen, it would be on them. You then enter the loading area and get on a police cruiser to begin the ride.

Zootopia land nick and judy car

You meet up with Nick and Judy in Tundra Town and ambush Bellwether. However, Bellwether tries to freeze you and escapes. You follow her in a train and soon crash land in Sahara Square. Nick and Judy spot Bellwether entering the Naturalists club, and you follow them. You encounter some unclothed mammals and then exit the club and follow Bellwether to the Rainforest District.

Zootopia land sahara square

At the Rainforest District, you get on a gondola with Nick and Judy, but then Bellwether ambushes your gondola and sends you tumbling down. You’re saved by some vines, and then Nick and Judy call on Flash to help them corner Bellwether. You and Flash chase Bellwether into a tunnel, and soon Nick and Judy, riding a helicopter, are able to safely rescue Gazelle. Bellwether, trying to stop Nick and Judy, gets caught in a big donut and is arrested by Clawhauser. You then attend the concert with the most amazing Gazelle animatronic, see Nick and Judy one last time, then exit the ride.

The ride is tons of fun, and is excellent on both a technical and narrative level. I really enjoy the story of this ride. It has high stakes, great pacing, and never feels dull. Every scene has dramatic heft, and the numerous surprises all stem from the plot, which I like. It’s refreshing to see Disney craft compelling narratives in their theme parks after a slew of rides that honestly don’t have narrative tension at all (such as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival, and Frozen Ever After).

Zootopia land upside down

It’s also an insanely detailed ride. You can tell Disney spared no expense when it came to building this. Everything from the physical sets to the screen segments seem so thoughtfully crafted. The queue is also a masterclass in placemaking and storytelling in a theme park space. The way the story unfolds in front of you in the queue should be used as an example for implicit storytelling for future rides.

I also love how innovative they got in using the trackless ride system. There’s a scene where you’re in Sahara Square, enter the Naturalists club, then go BACK to the Sahara Square room to get to the Rainforest District. It’s that kind of interesting use of the ride system that justifies the use of that ride system in the first place. I also really like the use of music on this ride. It perfectly accentuates every single scene and adds to the immersiveness of the ride.

Zootopia land save gazelle

Then of course we have the animatronics. The Gazelle one at the end is the star of the show. Its hips move to the beat of the song Try Everything in a way that’ll have you believing that she’s really there. It’s incredible, and is worth the long wait by itself. Then of course you have the Nick and Judy animatronics, as well as the Clawhauser, Chief Bogo, and other animatronics peppered throughout the ride as well. Like I said, Disney spared no expense when it came to this ride, and it shows.

Overall, this is a fantastic ride and one of the better rides Disney has made in recent years. It’s incredibly immersive, fun, and will leave you wanting to rush right back to the entrance to get back in line for it again. Make sure you don’t miss this when you visit Shanghai Disneyland.

Zootopia Comes Alive

Zootopia land zootopia comes alive

Zootopia Comes Alive is a puppet / animatronic show that takes place in the buildings of Zootopia. It’s a cute, fun show that allows us to see characters we don’t see in the ride in the flesh, or fur. Characters that appear here include Mr. Big, Fru Fru, Duke Weaselton, Judy’s parents, and even new Zootopia 2 characters like Gary De’Snake.

I was able to catch a showing with Mr. Big and Judy’s parents, which I thought was very well done. I couldn’t understand what they were talking about as it was all in Mandarin, but the animatronic puppets looked so life-like that I totally believed that they were the characters from the movie.

I would honestly wait and try and see if you can catch a show. They happen in the row of buildings opposite the queue for Zootopia: Hot Pursuit. It’s a bit random which show they end up playing, but no matter what show you get, seeing those characters in action is really fun and adds so much to the theming and immersion of the land.

Characters and Streetmosphere

Zootopia land drag

The only characters you can meet in Zootopia are Nick and Judy, who you can meet in the area between the police station and the Zootopia Central Station. I love how, even though there are no walkaround characters like in World of Frozen, they still make an effort to make the area feel lived-in by having this meet and greet and the Zootopia Comes Alive show.

I will say, though, that the lack of streetmosphere entertainment is a negative for the land. I do admit that you don’t necessarily need it as the land already feels so alive and kinetic that adding streetmosphere might just take up unnecessary space in an already small land, but having one show or a band or something would’ve added so much to the immersiveness of the land.

The land doesn’t feel static by any means, but it all just seems like a missed opportunity. Again, I understand that with space constraints they couldn’t include more entertainment, but even just having one person do something entertaining would go a long way to making the land feel more alive and lived-in.

Dining

Zootopia land donuts

There is one snack window in the land called Jumbeaux’s Cafe. It serves the famous Pawsicles, as well as donuts and jumbo pops as seen in the movie, along with other snacks inspired by the film. I wish there was a full on restaurant here, as this land is really lacking in things to do, but I’m glad that at least this window exists so we can try the snacks from the movie. I also see why a restaurant might not be the best idea given that you would be serving meat, which would be a no-go in a city where the meat is treated like a citizen. So unless they go with an all-vegetarian and vegan menu, I don’t see how a restaurant could work.

Zootopia land pawsicle

I was able to try 3 different food items when I visited Zootopia: The Jumbo Pop, the Mini-Donuts, and the Pawsicle. The Hawthorne-flavored Pawsicle was the highlight for me. It tasted very fruity while also being really refreshing in the heat. The Jumbo Pop was my next favorite. It was basically a chocolate rice krispie bar the size of my head. I couldn’t finish it, but it was very good. The donuts looked cute but tasted like regular chocolate donuts, nothing out of the ordinary.

All in all I thought the specialty snacks were really good. I wish there was a restaurant like I said, but these snacks satisfied my wanting to eat food seen in the movie. Everyone needs to have a Pawsicle. Seriously, it’s so good they were selling it outside of the land. Plus it looks really cute and I saw so many guests taking pictures throughout the land with their Pawsicles.

Shopping

Zootopia land store

There’s only one store in the land and it’s called Fashions by Fru Fru. It also happens to be the gift shop where the ride exits into. It sells a lot of Zootopia merchandise from hats to pins to keychains to apparel and everything in between. If you’re a big Zootopia fan, you’re going to love this shop.

I also really love the theming in this shop. By the checkout counters, if you look above, you’ll see pathways and tiny clothes on racks as if rodents also go about their shopping in that establishment. It’s cool little details like this that add so much to the storytelling of the land as a whole.

Zootopia land merch

In terms of the merch itself, I found it to be of a very high quality. I really enjoyed looking around and seeing all the cute Zootopia merch. I wish they had merch specifically for the land and ride (like I would’ve bought a Zootopia: Hot Pursuit shirt so fast) but for what they had I thought the merch assortment was very good and varied. I may have ended up snagging some shirts, pins, and keychains for myself.

Thoughts and Score

I remember when I wrote my review of World of Frozen I said that that land set the new standard for single-IP lands. Well, I would like to add to that statement. I think Zootopia is up there with World of Frozen and Cars Land as the gold standard in single-IP lands. I still don’t think single-IP lands should be the future of Imagineering and Disney Parks, but if they are an inevitable part of the current fabric of the parks, I need them to be made with the same painstaking detail as Zootopia land.

I love the story of Zootopia Day. I love how it connects everything in the land and I also like how, even if you don’t know that there’s a story, you can still enjoy the land and its attractions. It’s very inclusive in that way, and I think how it connects with the ride is done so masterfully by the brains inside Walt Disney Imagineering.

Zootopia land facades

Speaking of the ride, Shanghai Disneyland has a hit on their hands with this one. Immersive, fun, and with high enough stakes to make the whole thing feel exciting, it too sets the standard for the Disney immersive dark ride in the 2020s. I would ride it every time I visit Shanghai Disneyland, and would be perfectly happy with it being exclusive to this park forever.

Zootopia land art store

The design of the land is so immersive, detailed, and rewards exploration and observation. There are so many tiny details that I missed early on that I only discovered on my last walkthrough of the land. It’s absolutely, from a theming perspective, one of the best lands Disney has ever made. Even if its physical footprint is small, it seems large because of the amount of detail the Imagineers filled every corner of the land with. It truly is spectacular and one-of-a-kind.

Zootopia land otterton

I love the Zootopia Comes Alive show, as it really does as its name says and helps make Zootopia come alive. I also enjoyed all the themed snacks and thought they were all really well done and helped sell the immersion of the land. The one shop is also so well-themed that you will forgive its small area because it’s just so full of things to see.

Zootopia land shop

Zootopia land really hammers home the thought that, just like its smallest critters, even the smallest of lands can have the biggest of impacts. It’s my favorite land in Shanghai Disneyland, and for being only the size of half of Tomorrowland or a third of Adventure Isle, it packs so much into its area that you can forgive all its shortcomings.

Zootopia land closed shop

Zootopia is a pinnacle of Disney Parks. It’s become the envy of fans across the globe, and for good reason. It’s one of the most immersive lands ever, and I cannot in good conscience give it a score of less than perfect because that’s what this land is: perfect. Despite its small flaws, its strong points shine so bright it eclipses those flaws and proves that something doesn’t have to be perfect on paper to be perfect in reality. Zootopia is a winner, and I will never stop singing its praises.

10/10
