Klook.comBackground on Star Wars at Hong Kong Disneyland

Now before we get into it, I have to be honest about something. While there are still Star Wars offerings in Hong Kong Disneyland, it’s a lot less than what was previously there. When Star Wars reached its peak popularity with the Hong Kong audience sometime in 2016, Hong Kong Disneyland had a version of Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple, as well as a meet and greet with R2-D2, C3PO, and Chewbacca. There was even a Star Wars takeover event that would happen in Tomorrowland for a couple of months every year.
Ever since then, however, both the meet and greet location and Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple have closed. Star Wars merchandise has been greatly scaled back, and the park was left with only one real Star Wars attraction. There are many factors that contributed to this, with the biggest one being the rise of Marvel’s popularity in China that led Disney to switch gears from Star Wars to Marvel.
Still, even with the number of attractions becoming less, Star Wars is still represented in the parks. In fact, one of my favorite rides at Hong Kong Disneyland is a Star Wars ride. While you’re not going to find lands like Galaxy’s Edge or experiences like Savi’s Workshop at Hong Kong Disneyland, the park still hasn’t completely abandoned Star Wars. Below I have listed every major Star Wars offering still existing in the park and I have also jotted down some notes regarding each offering.
Let’s get into it!
Klook.comCurrent Star Wars Offerings
Hyperspace Mountain

This is the biggest and most notable Star Wars offering in the park. In fact, to my knowledge, most of the Star Wars offerings in this park are tied in one way or another to this attraction. I’ll explain what I mean by that in the next section. If you’re familiar with Disney Parks, then you know that Hyperspace Mountain is a Star Wars overlay of Space Mountain, a classic Disney attraction.
Space Mountain opened with the park in 2005. It was the only thrill ride in the park at the time, and while it may not be the best coaster in the park anymore, it’s still an impressive and thrilling experience. The premise of the ride is simple: you board a rocket and go blasting off into the cosmos, twisting and turning through the galaxies.
In 2016, Hong Kong Disneyland closed Space Mountain and reopened it as Hyperspace Mountain. While I still consider classic Space Mountain to be the superior version of Space Mountain, one aspect of the ride that is vastly improved in Hyperspace Mountain is the storytelling aspect because now there’s an actual story in this attraction.

In the story, Admiral Ackbar, relays to you that the Rebel Alliance needs you to pilot a reconnaissance vessel to help them survey a Star Destroyer spotted near Jakku. Once you arrive at the Star Destroyer accompanied by a squadron of X-wings after jumping to lightspeed, a fleet of enemy Imperial TIE fighters ambushes you.
What follows is a fight between the Rebels and the Empire, with the ride utilizing lasers and projections to simulate the fight. The twists and turns are supposed to be you dodging enemy attacks, all done in a way that is so immersive and fun. I won’t spoil the actual ride, as I’d like to keep that as a surprise for you, but it is such an excellent ride. The queue is pretty fun too, with posters of different rebel spacecraft and a screen that relays Admiral Ackbar’s message to you.

This is one of my favorite rides in the park today and used to be my favorite ride in the park. As I’ve gotten older I’ve gravitated more towards the slower rides, but this ride is still as fun as it was decades ago. If you’ve ridden Space Mountain in Anaheim, this version has the exact same track as that version. It’s definitely a must do for any Star Wars fan.
I would recommend riding this ride in the late morning or at night to minimize crowds. Premier Access and Single Rider are available at Hyperspace Mountain, which you can utilize if you want to ride the attraction in the middle of the day with no wait. There is also an on-ride photo in this attraction which you can purchase at the attraction gift shop.
Klook.comMerchandise
While a small selection of Star Wars merchandise can be found in the Main Street USA shops, the majority of Star Wars merch can be found in the Space Traders gift shop, which is the shop located at the exit of Hyperspace Mountain. This is what I meant when I said that everything related to Star Wars in this park was tied to Hyperspace Mountain. If you want your best chance at bringing home a Star Wars themed shirt or pin, then this store is a must-visit.
There’s also two special merchandise experiences in this store that you may want to do if you’re a big Star Wars fan: Droid Building and Lightsaber Building. Before I go into them, do note that these merchandise experiences are completely different from the Droid and Lightsaber building experiences found in Galaxy’s Edge. They’re a lot smaller in scale, and the products are not as high quality. These are really more like regular souvenirs or toys.
Klook.comDroid Building
The Droid building in the Star Traders shop has you making a small figurine of a droid where you can customize the colors of the body and limbs of the droid. The finished droid is kind of small, and to my knowledge it doesn’t move around like the bigger droids you can build in Galaxy’s Edge, but it’s still a cute little keepsake you can take home with you after your trip. In addition, the only droid design they have is R2-D2. Still, if you’re into Star Wars, this is a fun, cheaper alternative to the bigger droids you can buy in Galaxy’s Edge.
Lightsaber Building
Similar to the droid building, the lightsaber building allows you to customize the color and hilt of a lightsaber. These aren’t the fancy lightsabers that you can find in Galaxy’s Edge and look more like the toy lightsabers you can find in Target. Still, it’s a pretty unique experience to be able to customize these lightsabers. They come in a variety of colors and you can even mix and match them. Just like the droids, this is a fun and cheaper alternative to the lightsabers you can find in Galaxy’s Edge.
