Have you ever wished to skip the line at Hong Kong Disneyland (HKDL) without having to pay for a Premier Access pass? Well, there is actually a way for you to do that! Introducing Single Rider lines! These specialized lines allow you to skip the lines at some of the park’s most popular attractions. That being said, they do come with some caveats, which I will further explain in this Hong Kong Disneyland Single Rider Lines Guide.

This is one of my favorite ways to skip the lines at Disney Parks, especially for those of you who are like me and travel to the Disney Parks solo. Note that these lines aren’t available on every attraction, and some parks have more single rider lines than others. I’ll be discussing what exactly single rider lines are, how they work in Hong Kong Disneyland, and how to utilize them to save you tons of time waiting in line.

What are Single Rider Lines?

Single rider lines are specialized queues found in some attractions across the Disney Parks. They were implemented not only to give guests a shorter queue option, but to maximize the operational efficiency of a particular ride.

See, Disney noticed that the amount of guests actually riding some attractions was lower than their theoretical hourly capacity. This was due in part to the fact that some vehicles were cycling through with empty seats due to crowd patterns and guest inflow.

Now you might be wondering how this happens. For example, let’s say a boat ride has 4 seats per row. A family of three comes along and occupies one row, leaving a seat empty. This results in the hourly capacity of a ride decreasing by 1 because, unless cast members are able to find a guest riding by themselves to fill the empty gap, the seat is effectively “lost”.

Now imagine this happening on every boat at least once or twice. Depending on the capacity of the ride, that’s a lot of potential capacity lost which also directly translates to longer queues as hundreds of people that could’ve gone on the ride in that hour were not able to.

That’s where single rider lines come in! On rides that lose a significant portion of their hourly capacity due to guest inflow patterns, a separate line called the single rider line is used to fill in the gaps and bring the ride back up to its full hourly capacity. Because of how they are able to make rides more efficient, they are in use in multiple attractions all over the world.

Now you know why single rider lines exist, the question becomes how do they work, particularly in Hong Kong Disneyland? That’s what I’ll get into in the next section of this Hong Kong Disneyland Single Rider Lines Guide.

Hong Kong Disneyland Single Rider Lines – How Do They Work?

Hong Kong Disneyland’s single rider lines work exactly like single rider lines found in other Disney Parks around the world. Whenever a single seat in a row is left empty, a cast member will pull a guest from the single rider line to fill in the empty seat. Because not every cycle will have empty seats, the single rider line technically moves slower than the regular line. That being said, however, less people are usually in the single rider line, meaning you’re still looking at a wait time significantly shorter than the regular wait time.

There are two more important things you need to know about how single rider lines work. The first is that, because you’re made to fill in empty rows or seats on attractions, you cannot pick where to sit. This can be a problem on some rides like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland, where I once queued up in the single rider line and was assigned the wettest seat on the ride. By lining up in the single rider line, you forego the ability to request where to sit. You will sit wherever the cast member tells you to sit.

The other important aspect of how single rider lines work that needs mentioning is that if your entire party lines up in a single rider queue, you will be split up. This means that people from your party may ride in different vehicles, and riding in the same vehicle is not guaranteed. You also will probably not be sitting beside each other on the ride. If you have younger kids or have people in your party that need to be supervised on rides, then the single rider line may not be for you.

There are also some negatives to using single rider lines. At some attractions, you won’t be able to experience the full queue of an attraction because single rider lines usually lead you directly to the loading area of an attraction. Because of this, you miss out on a lot of the story elements of an attraction. Single rider lines may also close at any point for capacity purposes, and some single rider lines can take as long to get through as some regular lines. Just something to keep in mind.

Which Rides in Hong Kong Disneyland Have Single Rider Lines?

Single rider lines are only available in 3 rides at Hong Kong Disneyland: Hyperspace Mountain in Tomorrowland, Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars in Grizzly Gulch, and Toy Soldier Parachute Drop in Toy Story Land. Considering HKDL has 18 rides, this means that only 1/6th of the rides in the park have single rider lines. This is small as compared to rides that have a Premier Access line, with all rides in the park minus the Main Street Vehicles having a Premier Access line.

All these single rider lines move incredibly fast, and the longest I’ve waited at any of these lines was 3 minutes at Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars with 10 people ahead of me. There are a couple of other rides in the park that I think need a Single Rider Line, including Frozen Ever After, Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs, and RC Racer. I hope HKDL finds a way to incorporate single rider lines into these attractions in the future.

How to Use Single Rider Lines

Using a single rider line is easy. First head to the entrance of the attraction and ask the cast member to point you to the single rider line entrance. If the single rider line is open, they’ll direct you to that queue. You then enter the queue and walk until you reach the end of the line. You’ll then wait until everyone in front of you is assigned a seat on a ride vehicle. When it’s your turn to ride, the cast member will assign you the next available empty seat.

As earlier mentioned, you cannot pick your seat on a vehicle if you line up at the single rider line. You will also be seated next to a stranger, so if that’s something that makes you uncomfortable, your party may want to enter the regular queue.

Strategies to Maximize Single Rider Lines

To maximize your time the most, you’ll want to utilize them when the park is at its busiest, which is usually in the afternoon to early evening. Skipping long queues at Hyperspace Mountain, Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, and Toy Soldier Parachute Drop is critical as these 3 rides usually get long queues, especially in the middle of the day. Single rider lines are not worth it, and may even be closed, during rope drop and park close. Lines will still be short so using single rider lines will not be worth it.

With that being said, HKDL doesn’t really get long queues to begin with. You’ll find that on most days waits for these attractions won’t exceed 30 minutes. But if you do happen to visit during a day when crowds are a little worse than normal, these single rider lines will be a nice, free, and quick way to get on these attractions.

I have a Hong Kong Disneyland 1-Day Itinerary and a Hong Kong Disneyland 2-Day Itinerary. You can utilize single rider lines while using these itineraries. Just use the single rider queue for the aforementioned rides when you arrive at that portion of the itinerary.

Do note that single rider lines for attractions can be removed or added without prior notice. This means that one day there could be a single rider line for that attraction and the next day it could be closed. I would check the Hong Kong Disneyland website as well as the HKDL app for the most up-to-date info on single rider lines at the park.
